Topic: Advice Where to live and pricingPosted: 29 Jun 2008 at 6:40pm |

My husband and I are in the process of applying for our permanent residency visa. We have a daughter of 16 and a son of 9. It is a toss up between moving to Perth or Melbourne. If there is any one that has maybe lived in both areas that could tell us, where are there more jobs? (My husband is in electronics, at the moment he is in sales. I am a branch manager for a large JSE listed company). Are jobs really so easy to find? What areas are the best to live in? Where is the cost of living cheaper?
We are willing to take any advice. |

You probably want to place this in the http://www.rainbownation.com/community/forum/default.asp?C=2 forum.
While Perth is similar to Cape Town, you'd find Melbourne somewhat colder. we have friends in Melbourne and they have no complaints. You might find management and sales jobs harder to find than technical jobs, and from what I hear, 'if you're prepared to get your hands dirty you'll easily make it in Oz'. There are lucky breaks, so it's a waiting game made harder with having kids. In the end I think it's worth it no matter which Oz place you stay... Hello there Nadd. Perth has 4 seasons in a year, where Melbourne has 4seasons in a day.Housing is more expensive in perth but employment possibilities are good.Salaries are also slightly higher in perth.Trades are definetely required more so in western australia,where-as melbourne is more a IT hub.Hope this can assist in any way Cheers!

Hi Nadd,
We lived in Perth and Melbourne over the years and found Perth to be a friendly little city - we thought it was more like PE. These days the economy has boomed and prices have gone up for housing etc. A great place to have kids and chock full of South-Africans.....
Melbourne is more of a big city and has more "culture"- like CT. The economy is ok but things are tight at the moment. There are many corporate offices in Melbourne and jobs are a bit harder to find....(depending on what you want to do)....
Feel free to ask any questions and we will try and give a decent answer - btw we have lived in the country areas as well and now live on the East coast on the Gold Coast (100km south of Brisbane)
